Salt Abatement and Stain Removal

The white powder that is often found on masonry is called efflorescence.  It is almost always the result of too much water in a masonry wall.  The water dissolves soluble salts which then migrate in liquid form towards the surface of the masonry where they dry and leave a fine white powder.  This powder may or may not cause damage to the masonry.  Sub-efflorescence is an extremely destructive form of efflorescence in which the soluble salts re-crystalize near the face of the masonry but below the surface. The re-crystallization causes the faces of brick and stone to sheer off leaving a damaged masonry unit.
