Lime Mortar Restoration, Riegelsville PA
This stone smokehouse, once forgotten, has been renewed. Most of the original rough plaster had worn free from the rubble stone walls long ago. We used local sand from the nearby Delaware River that closely resembled that of the original mortar (but with less silt) and we mixed this with larger aggregate from a local sand quarry. We created a repointing mortar that would fill the large mortar joints since the walls were not going to be re-parged with lime plaster. In the restoration process we removed a lot of very loose lime plaster, stabilized the wall around the door and then repointed around the old but well bonded plaster. Additionally, we added small stone to fill large gaps in the original walls.
